It’s been a year, time for a new post! ; )
June projects included SRMP Mentoring, Science Does Sports!, and secret Radiolab recording!
SRMP Mentoring
My parents were teachers, and I spent much of my childhood convincing myself “I’ll never be a teacher”. Instead, I’m a professor and mentor!
The Science Research and Mentoring Program (SRMP) is a core part of my academic year (along with NYU), where I work with 3 students to conduct research. This used to be a way for me to get a little side project done, but now with my other projects its how I stay connected to my science at all! My cohort this year of I, O, and N did a great job looking for “Complex Rotators”.
They presented their work at the SRMP Symposium to their friends, family and peers, including to the museum president Sean Decatur!

Science Does Sports!

Our June Epsiode of Science Tonight! was sports themed! Its the summer of sports here in NYC, and we got in on the fun. My favorite jokes were celebrating the NY Ticks, describing a cheetah chazing a gazelle as “competitive tag”, and Kristina and Kit killing it with their sets [the God of All Teammates and a ranking of Top Underdogs Under Dogs, respectively].

The guest this month was a longtime friend, Dr. Melina Giakoumis. We met first over a decade ago when we educators at the Museum. Since then we’ve both earned PhDs, one in stars, the other in starfish! (Sea stars truly, but Melina is a cool scientist and doesn’t mind the inaccurate term every now and then)

The show culminated in a soccer match between our two fields, and came down to a penalty shoutout between us!
Secret Radiolab recording
It’s still a secret! But its a story that my friend Rebecca and I have been thinking about for years. It was great to get in the both and get some tape recording for it
